As a dog mom, the monsoon season always brings mixed feelings. On one hand, there’s the refreshing coolness after the sweltering heat. On the other, I find myself worrying about my fur baby—because for dogs, the rainy season isn’t just about getting wet, it’s a time when health, hygiene, and comfort need extra attention.
If you’re like me, always trying to ensure your dog is safe and cozy, here are some heartfelt and practical precautions to take during the rains.
1. Protect Those Precious Paws
Our dogs can’t tell us when something’s wrong, but they definitely feel it. During walks, their paws come in direct contact with wet roads, mud, and even harmful chemicals. I always make it a point to wipe my dog’s paws clean with a soft cloth or pet-friendly wipes after every walk. Sometimes I even use dog booties, especially when the roads are extra muddy. Trust me, their little feet will thank you.
2. Keep Them Warm and Dry
After a rainy walk, the first thing I reach for is a fluffy towel. Drying your dog properly— especially their belly, armpits, and between the toes—is super important. If they stay damp, it can lead to fungal infections or colds. A good raincoat for dogs is also a lifesaver; it keeps their body warm and prevents them from getting soaked. And please, avoid switching on the fan or AC right after they’re wet. They feel the chill just like we do.
3. Watch Out for Puddles
I know how tempting those puddles are for dogs to splash or sip from—but stagnant water can carry nasty germs that cause infections like leptospirosis. I always carry a bottle of clean water and a travel bowl to keep my pup hydrated and away from puddles. It’s a small step that can prevent a lot of trouble.
4. Be Gentle with Their Skin and Coat
The humidity can be harsh on their skin, especially if they have a thick or long coat. Regular brushing helps keep their fur clean and dry, and makes it easier to spot any rashes or ticks. I also keep a lookout for any odd smells or signs of itching—these could be early signs of skin infections.
5. Ear Care is So Important
If your dog has floppy ears like mine, don’t ignore ear hygiene. Rain and moisture can get trapped inside, making ears a perfect place for infections. I use a vet-approved ear cleaner and gently wipe the ears dry every few days. It really helps in avoiding painful ear issues.

6. Comfort Them During Storms
Thunderstorms can be scary—even for brave dogs. Mine hides under the table or sticks close to me when the thunder starts. During such times, just your presence and a calm tone can go a long way. Soft music, cuddles, or their favorite toy can ease their anxiety. Let them know you’re there.
7. Don’t Skip Exercise and Diet
Rainy days can mess up routines, but dogs still need their daily play. I try fun indoor games like hide-and-seek, puzzle feeders, or training sessions. A balanced diet is equally important—good nutrition helps boost their immunity when they’re more vulnerable to infections.
8. Stay Ahead of Parasites
Ticks, fleas, and worms love this weather. I stay regular with deworming and flea treatments after speaking to my vet. It’s always better to prevent than treat later.
In Conclusion
The monsoon can be a magical time for you and your dog—as long as you’re mindful. Just like we take care of our children, our dogs depend on us to keep them safe and comfortable. With a little extra effort, a watchful eye, and lots of love, the rains can become another joyful season you and your pet enjoy together.
So wrap them in a towel, give them a cuddle, and let the pitter-patter of the rain bring you closer—because nothing beats the warmth of a healthy, happy dog by your side.
