Thor Freudenthal’s directorial debut, Hotel for Dogs, is a 2009 American family comedy film based on Lois Duncan’s 1971 novel of the same name. The film stars Jake T. Austin, Emma Roberts, Kyla Pratt, Lisa Kudrow, Kevin Dillon, and Don Cheadle and follows the story of two orphaned brothers who secretly take in stray dogs along with their family dog at a vacant hotel.

 Andi and her younger brother Bruce live in a foster home where dogs are absolutely prohibited. But they’re willing to risk everything for Friday their dog, the adorable dog they secretly care for. They eventually discover an ideal shelter for him, a massive abandoned hotel that Bruce converts with his ingenuity. To help feed the dogs and ensure sanitary facilities, exercise, grooming facilities and entertainment, Bruce invents and builds a variety of innovative gadgets using parts stolen from his foster parents. Friday is soon joined by several pooches. The dogs are seen delighted to spend leisure time enjoying meals and spa time. But one day, the local residents noticed the disappearance of all the stray dogs and informed the police. The police call Animal Control who tries to take them back.
