In the recent times, world over, we have noticed humanisation of pets. The emotional bond, the sense of indispensability, the love and affection for them have made our new age pet parents very zealous to research and learn everything about their fur babies. As true to every study, even here, we all have come across grandma’s tales, myths, well conducted experiments and more. All so confusing, isn’t it!!!
Between many questions that tug and tangle our brains, the most prominent one is “What’s the right diet for our dogs?” and why do packed pet foods even exist when we have home cooked meals at our quick disposal? Well, the answer is, as human parents when we are curating food for another species, we are bound to go wrong unless supervised by experts, or guided by research. Many of us won’t know that dogs metabolise food seven times faster than humans, or that a dog needs four times the protein, five times Vitamin D, twelve times calcium, and two and half times the Vitamin A than that a regular human adult needs. In such a situation, it’s not possible for a pet parent to get this delicate balance of complete nutrition right. Hence, it’s imperative that they choose a food option which nourishes their pets correctly.
Let’s try to understand a dog’s biology at a macro level for some basic knowhow. Very prominent and distinct research which have studied a dog’s physiology states that the gut is more in compliance with the genetics of an omnivore than a carnivore. That means that dogs are biologically evolved to eat both vegetarian as well as non-vegetarian diets. Even the digestive enzymes which are present in the stomach of a dog, can process all carbohydrates. Given to these factors, veterinarians and researchers of this field state that dogs should follow an omnivorous diet for an optimum health. Consult your vet for more information.
Another much debated talk point is the process of evolution for dogs. Contrary to a myth that has been made popular, dogs are not wolves and they mustn’t be on any wolf diet. It’s true that “dog” as a species started with the evolution of wolves and subsequent domestication of their progenies over millenniums has led to the fur kids we know of today. But then, that’s just the first line of breeds – the Shepherds. It will be interesting for many of our readers to know that there are so many breeds of dog from the line of Mastiffs too. So, if wolves were the first line of ancestors, then there must be another line which started the Mastiff and Magnolias, because many of today’s popular breeds are through a Mastiff genome rather than a wolf genome.
Some popular breeds from the Mastiff genome are our Shih tzu, Chow Chow, Boxer, Bulldog, Saint Bernard, Rottweiler and the Hounds. While from the wolf genome are the Shepherds, Huskies, Labradors, the Retrievers and Dalmatians.
In wake of such information, we at Signature request our pet parents to rely on learned experts for their fur kid’s diet because the universal law of health says, “we are what we eat”.
